Southwest Florida's rainy season runs from June through November — and it doesn't ease in gently. Within weeks of the season's start, daily afternoon storms become routine, and the threat of a named hurricane looms over every forecast. For homeowners, the time to prepare is now, before the first system forms in the Gulf.
Start With Your Roof
Your roof is your home's primary defense against rain and wind. Before rainy season, have a licensed roofer check for:
- Missing, cracked, or curling shingles
- Failed flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights
- Soft spots or areas showing wear and aging
- Clogged or sagging gutters that cause water to back up under the eaves
A small repair caught in April costs a fraction of what water damage to your ceilings, walls, and insulation will cost in August. Don't wait for a leak to tell you there's a problem.
Stock Up on Tarps
Even a well-maintained roof can suffer sudden damage in a severe storm. Having a few heavy-duty tarps on hand lets you cover any openings fast and prevent further water intrusion until a roofer can get to you. After a major storm, contractors are booked out for weeks — a tarp buys you critical time.
Look for polyethylene tarps rated at least 6 mils thick, in sizes that cover your main roof sections. Store them somewhere dry and accessible.
Install Storm Shutters Before the Season
Wind-driven rain is often more damaging than flooding. Storm shutters protect your windows and doors from flying debris and the sudden pressure changes that can blow out glass and compromise your home's structure. Accordion shutters, roll-down shutters, and panel systems all have their place — the right choice depends on your windows and budget.
Getting them installed before hurricane season means they'll be ready when a storm is 48 hours out. Don't be the person scrambling to find a contractor the week a Category 3 is in the Gulf.
Pre-Schedule a Post-Hurricane Inspection
Here's something most homeowners don't think about until it's too late: after a major hurricane, every roofing contractor in Southwest Florida is booked for weeks. RL Spencer now offers pre-scheduled post-hurricane inspections. Sign up before the season, and if a named storm affects our service area, you're already in the queue — guaranteed a faster response than homeowners who call after the fact.
